WK 14 - JANUARY 13TH 2014
Our learning week beginning Monday 13th January 2014
This week Louise has been working on the MEP maths unit of Number Systems. She will be continuing using the MEP syllabus for her maths as it is still suitable for working with the new exam board.
In English Louise has started working on the new IGCSE syllabus. This week she has started reading the Thomas Hardy texts, The Darkling Thrush. On the Departure Platform, The Pine Planters, The Convergence of the Twain, and The Going. She has been looking at the way in which they were written and their meanings and comparing his works.
In Geography Louise has started the IGCSE unit "Weather, Climate and Natural Vegetation". We have started this unit with a look to how information about the weather is collected and how the data is measured.
In history Louise has started working on researching the events that lead up to the start of the First World War.
These units are likely to take until Easter to complete with various

In numeracy this week Katie has started using the MEP maths book 6a. This book contains all the maths that she should have gained the knowledge of up to the end of Key Stage 2. We are using this as a method to see that she has gained the sufficient knowledge before she progresses onto Key Stage 3 later in the year. The exercises are going to be completed in a random method so that she is completing different types of maths all the time and not just one topic so hopefully this will help in remembering the information she has gained. She has made a good start with this.
For the next few weeks in English, History and Geography, Katie will be looking at the topic of China and Chinese New Year. We will be looking at different aspects of China and carrying out research along with making notes from presentations and reading notes and books. She will use this information to produce two lapbooks and complete a number of worksheets. Katie will produce one book about the country of China and another about the Chinese New Year. This unit will take up most of the learning time and entail using her English, Geography, History, I.T and art and craft skills. This unit will last a number of weeks. She has got off to a good start and has made her lapbooks and started to produce her work to put inside them.
Lily will be continuing to use her maths and English work books and has progressed up a level to the next stage.
Lily will also complete work on China and Chinese New Year and produce lapbooks about both like Katie. Obviously this will be at a lower level than Katie. Like Katie she has made her lapbooks and started to produce some work to put inside them

WK 13 - JANUARY 6TH 2014 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
Happy New Year from us all.
This week the girls got on with learning after they had a well deserved and relaxing few weeks over the festive period.
They were each bought a tablet for Christmas so they can use them to do their work on and also be able to use them for work outside of home.
They were each bought a tablet for Christmas so they can use them to do their work on and also be able to use them for work outside of home.
Unfortunately just before Christmas I found out that the exam centre we were going to use for Louise to sit her GCSE examinations in May 2015 has informed us that they will not now be a centre for the Edexcell Exam Board. This basically means that we have two options that are open for us. We can either find somewhere else for Louise to sit her exams or we change to a different exam board and basically start over again and most of the work Louise has done since September will be wasted.
This has lead to a lot of further research and some hard decisions had to be made. Louise, mum and I decided that with the nearest exam centre that accepted private candidates to sit the Edexcell exams being in either Manchester or Leeds it would be worse for Louise to have to go there than it would be having to try and catch and catch up with the work and be able sit them in a centre in Blackpool which she would be happier with doing.
So, we are back to the start and will now be working towards sitting the Cambridge International GCSE's. This actually made Louise happier as all the subjects she is taking are now entirly exam based and they no longer rely on course work to be completed. These exams are recognised not only in this country but are widely accepted throughout the world.
This week Louise was concentrating on her maths work, as what she has learnt already is still mostly relavant for her new exams, while I work on preparing her syallabus for the other subjects she is taking so she can start work on those next week.
Katie and Lily have been doing maths and english as well as their art and craft, reading and cooking.
