CHINESE NEW YEAR FEAST!!! SATURDAY FEBRUARY 1ST 2014

CHINESE NEW YEAR FEAST!!!

Following on from all the work that Katie and Lily had done about China and Chinese New Year, we concluded our activities with a Chinese Feast on Chinese New Years Day.

The girls invited family and friends to Grandma and Ray's house to sample a range of Chinese food.

Katie did quite well with using chop sticks but most people stuck with using a fork and spoon!

Everybody had a great time and it was wonderful way to end our work on China.

WK 14 - JANUARY 13TH 2014

Our learning week beginning Monday 13th January 2014

This week Louise has been working on the MEP maths unit of Number Systems. She will be continuing using the MEP syllabus for her maths as it is still suitable for working with the new exam board.

In English Louise has started working on the new IGCSE syllabus. This week she has started reading the Thomas Hardy texts, The Darkling Thrush. On the Departure Platform,  The Pine Planters, The Convergence of the Twain, and The Going. She has been looking at the way in which they were written and their meanings and comparing his works.

In Geography Louise has started the IGCSE unit "Weather, Climate and Natural Vegetation". We have started this unit with a look to how information about the weather is collected and how the data is measured.

In history Louise has started working on researching the events that lead up to the start of the First World War.

These units are likely to take until Easter to complete with various

In numeracy this week Katie has started using the MEP maths book 6a. This book contains all the maths that she should have gained the knowledge of up to the end of Key Stage 2. We are using this as a method to see that she has gained the sufficient knowledge before she progresses onto Key Stage 3 later in the year. The exercises are going to be completed in a random method so that she is completing different types of maths all the time and not just one topic so hopefully this will help in remembering the information she has gained. She has made a good start with this.

For the next few weeks in English, History and Geography, Katie will be looking at the topic of China and Chinese New Year. We will be looking at different aspects of China and carrying out research along with making notes from presentations and reading notes and books. She will use this information to produce two lapbooks and complete a number of worksheets. Katie will produce one book about the country of China and another about the Chinese New Year. This unit will take up most of the learning time and entail using her English, Geography, History, I.T and art and craft skills. This unit will last a number of weeks. She has got off to a good start and has made her lapbooks and started to produce her work to put inside them.

Lily will be continuing to use her maths and English work books and has progressed up a level to the next stage.

Lily will also complete work on China and Chinese New Year and produce lapbooks about both like Katie. Obviously this will be at a lower level than Katie. Like Katie she has made her lapbooks and started to produce some work to put inside them

This week all clubs and activities have been carried out as usual.

Thankyou girls for trying your best and having a great week.

WK 13 - JANUARY 6TH 2014 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Happy New Year from us all.

This week the girls got on with learning after they had a well deserved and relaxing few weeks over the festive period.

They were each bought a tablet for Christmas so they can use them to do their work on and also be able to use them for work outside of home.

Unfortunately just before Christmas I found out that the exam centre we were going to use for Louise to sit her GCSE examinations in May 2015 has informed us that they will not now be a centre for the Edexcell Exam Board. This basically means that we have two options that are open for us. We can either find somewhere else for Louise to sit her exams or we change to a different exam board and basically start over again and most of the work Louise has done since September will be wasted.

This has lead to a lot of further research and some hard decisions had to be made. Louise, mum and I decided that with the nearest exam centre that accepted private candidates to sit the Edexcell exams being in either Manchester or Leeds it would be worse for Louise to have to go there than it would be having to try and catch and catch up with the work and be able sit them in a centre in Blackpool which she would be happier with doing.

So, we are back to the start and will now be working towards sitting the Cambridge International GCSE's. This actually made Louise happier as all the subjects she is taking are now entirly exam based and they no longer rely on course work to be completed. These exams are recognised not only in this country but are widely accepted throughout the world.

This week Louise was concentrating on her maths work, as what she has learnt already is still mostly relavant for her new exams, while I work on preparing her syallabus for the other subjects she is taking so she can start work on those next week.

Katie and Lily have been doing maths and english as well as their art and craft, reading and cooking.

LETS PARTY!!!!!!!

On Thursday 19th December all three girls went to Blackpool Yong Carers Youth Club Christmas Party. It was held at Holy Cross Church Hall on Central Drive in South Shore.

This is where Louise volunteers every Thursday when she helps with the running of the club.

     This is what Louise did to help with the party;

"I helped put all the presents out onto the tables for all the children, i helped make the food and drinks, helped the DJ, they played pass the parcels (there were 5 parcels), they played loads of games, they saw father Christmas, they had popcorn and they had their face painted and loads more".

PANTO TIME THURSDAY 19TH DECEMBER 2013

ITS THE PANTOMIME!!   OH NO IT ISN'T............OH YES IT IS!!!

On Thursday 19th December Lily and Katie went with Mum along to the Grand Theatre to see the pantomime.

This year the pantomime was the favourite Peter Pan.

Katie and Lily were taken on a magical theatricle journey to visit Edwardian London where Wendy Darling was telling a bedtime story to her brothers Michael and John of swashbuckling swordplay with the formidable pirate leader Captain Hook and the heroics of the playful Peter Pan  which leads to leads them over moonlit flying over rooftops to the lush jungles of the mysterious kingdom of Neverland.

The girls were thrilled to see Tom Lister (Emmerdale's Carl King), and Radio Wave Breakfast show host Hayley Kay.

They enjoyed the comedy acrobats The Nitwits and the very talented boys and girls from Barbara Jacksons schools of Dance.

I am sure Katie and Lily would have loved to have joined Wendy and her brothers in an exhilarating life, free of grown-up rules, while also facing the inevitable showdown with Hook and his pirates.

They all absolutely enjoyed the pantomime (I think Sarah has actually fallen in love with Tom Lister!!) that they are already wanting to book for next Christmas and the panto Sleeping Beauty.

WK 7 - OCTOBER 28TH 2013

Our learning week beginning Monday 28th October 2013

Louise has this week started on the MEP maths unit of Trigonometry. She has been working through the set exercises and has needed a lot of one to one input as this is new to her and I have obviously need to discuss the topic with her and show her how to achieve the right results. Even though this a new unit she has made good progress.

In English the reading of Romeo and Juliet has been come to an end. She is now concentrating on completing her character analysis and answering the questions in the work booklet.

Geography is a continuation on Urban Environments and in History she is continuing working on the unit Changes in medicine 1845 - 1945.

Katie has continued with her numeracy and literacy work. Numeracy this week was concentrated mainly on fractions.

Literacy has seen Katie produce some excellent descriptive articles about the topic of "A night in a haunted house". She has enjoyed this type of writing and has managed to scare us!!!

In History Katie has been researching the topic of Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday. This research will be used next week when she will spend  the week completing work on the topic of Remembrance.

Lily has been using her maths and English books and is continuing to work through the topics and grasp an understanding of the methods involved with the minimal of input needed. She has wanted to do this work most of the week so no other subjects were done this week.

There have been no clubs for the girls this week as all clubs are closed with the schools being on half term.
